About Me

Based in Prague, I am an English singer, song-writer, writer, researcher, theologian and teacher with a particular passion for acoustic/jazz music. I work as a soloist as well as partnering with local musicians in various projects. One such partnership was with composer Daniel Kyzlink (as lyricist) for a work called The Rock Mass which was recently performed at the Mēstké divadlo Brno (Brno City Theatre) and previously by the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra.
I love songs which have poetic and evocative lyrics, but for me, music has to groove as well - it has to move you in some way.
There are links here to some of the other projects I'm involved with, but the main purpose of this site is to encourage you to contact me and book me (or me + band) for a gig or workshop/seminar. Hope to hear from you, and thanks so much for visiting.

Meet Gaz and Sara!

Thanks for visiting my website! There's still not too much going on musically at the moment as I really need to focus on my academic work. But don't forget that over the Easter weekend there will be two performances of SANCTUS, The Rock Mass, at the Městské divadlo Brno on the 14 and 15 April. Gaz Twist (he of 'high-belt tenor' fame) will be the the male soloist, and joining him up-front will be the very talented Sara Louise, also from London. Click on the video link and, as if by magic, you will meet them!

Also, looking forward to speaking/singing at the World Youth Day of the Archbishopric of Prague this coming Saturday (the 8 April). Looking forward to being with you guys!
And then at the beginning of May (1–5) I will be teaching for a week at the YWAM worship school in Burtigny, Switzerland, and hoping to get across to France and visit my wonderful French friends.

It's been quite a special day for me... visit my FB page for more news.

Peace, John

Performances of The Rock Mass and a new album

Happy New Year to you! Here's some great news for a change...

Although I'm not doing much publicly at the moment, a lot is going on behind the scenes which will lead to some innovative concert performances in the future.

The Rock Mass

First, I'm thrilled to be able to announce two Rock Mass shows at the Městské divadlo Brno on 14 and 15 April. These shows will feature the same soloists from the UK as on the CD – Kirsten Joy and Gaz Twist – with full orchestra and rock band. They will be amazing shows! Tickets will be available from the theatre website from mid-February.

New album

Also, I am working on material for new live shows and an album – again working with Daniel Kyzlink (composer of The Rock Mass) as producer. The album will be called Songs of Innocence and Experience, a title inspired, of course, by the enigmatic William Blake. Musically I am returning more to my acoustic roots in English, Irish and Scottish folk music, but having said that, will be working with some extraordinary musicians. It will be anything but a 'folk' album, but rather a fusion of diverse styles. My aim is to produce an album that is worth listening to more than once! Like The Rock Mass, the mood will but positive, but also explore some deep mystical and spiritual themes from a somewhat sideways perspective (after all, most song writers are poets and philosophers).

Further performances of The Rock Mass in October

Also, we have been short-listed for a grant from The Ministry of Culture for two further Rock Mass shows at the end of October – a further performance in Brno and one in Prague.

So although I may not appear to be doing much at the moment, a lot is going on which will result in some great live music! I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much for your patience and ongoing support, and again, I hope 2017 will be peaceful and productive for you.

Saturday 20 June      Nové Město pod Smrkem  19:00–20:30  (main square I think)

Sunday 21 June        Celetná 20 (in the Old Town), Prague, 17:30 in bar downstairs.

If you are new to this site, don't forget to check out The Rock Mass website and buy a CD. It's awesome!

Thanks for the love

Advent news

Haven't posted for while - just wanted to let you know that I'm still alive! Having been in the UK for almost the whole of November, it's been a while since I/we have done a gig - but plans are brewing for concerts + a recording in the new year. Watch this space. Also, Daniel Kyzlink and I have been working hard on The Rock Mass project - our new international shop should be online in a week or so, so you know where to buy all your Christmas presents! (If you live in the Czech Republic you can buy already by bank transfer or dobirka). The new international version of the CD is awesome!
You may have also read that I have left AMM. Having been involved in the work for many years it was quite sad to leave, but I was not happy with the way things were developing, so I actually feel quite relieved to have left, and am looking forward to new things - not least doing more gigs and catching up on my studies. If you are one of my AMM friends, I hope we will meet up again before too long.
I wish you a very peaceful advent season. Hope you don't get too seduced by all the matierialism - but don't forget to relax a bit. Still time to book an advent concert if you are interested.
May 2015 be a great year for you.

I would like to thank all those who came to my concert near St Albain on Friday 18 July. I really enjoyed the evening! - I hope you did too. Such an amazing place to do a concert! It was very special for me to see so many friends, some of whom I have known for many years! Very special. A big thank-you to Pierre and Raphael for helping to set up the room, and of course thanks to Claudie for organising things so well and inviting so many many people. St Albain and the Macon region has a very special place in my heart - although I have travelled far and lived in many other countries since my time in France, I always carry a little bit of France in my heart. I hope to return before too long - with my band! See you all soon I hope.
